Gunnel Wåhlstrand (b 1974), one of Sweden´s most acclaimed artists, works with large scale ink wash paintings based on old photos from her private family album. The process is slow and meticulous, with no room for error.
When Wåhlstrand began recreating the photographs it was important to her that the paintings turned out physically larger than herself. Nothing was to be hidden but made as visible and tangible as possible, in an attempt to understand and immerse herself in an unknown past.
Gunnel Wåhlstrand: "I started working with ink because the technique resembles a slow developing process, and the irreversible quality of ink follows the notion of everything in life having consequences - you can´t undo your actions."
Gunnel Wåhlstrands first monograph representing her works made between 2002-20012. The text is written by curators Jaspers Sharp (Vienna) and Ben Street (London)with a foreword by David Neuman, curator and director of Magasin lll Museum & Foundation for Contemporary Art.
