Gunnel Wåhlstrand is known for her large-scale ink wash paintings, in which she depicts memories, people and landscapes with an almost photorealistic precision and a fascinating presence and sensitivity. Her works are often based on family photo albums, and she subtly engages in a dialogue with her own history, but also with the passage of time and human existence. Through her unique technique and slow, almost meditative working process, Wåhlstrand conveys a deep reflection on identity, memory and loss.
The exhibition at Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde offers a deep dive into Wåhlstrand's artistic practice, presenting both early works and completely new paintings that have never been shown before. Visitors will experience how the artist explores a poetic encounter between light and dark, presence and absence in her ink wash paintings.
The exhibition catalogue is richly illustrated with an essay by the art critic and dramaturge Tor Billgren as well as an article with a conversation between Gunnel Wåhlstrand and the artist Ulla Wiggen.
