Cajsa von Zeipel - Saturn Return: Stockholm

Andréhn-Schiptjenko has the pleasure to announce Cajsa von Zeipel’s new solo-exhibition, Saturn Return, the artist’s second at the gallery. 

Since graduating from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, Sweden in 2010, von Zeipel has become internationally known for her white large-scale plaster sculptures. Her main subject has been young androgynous women and teenage girls that challenge both the viewer and traditional conventions by referring to contemporary subcultures as well as to the classical tradition of sculpture.

In the exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko von Zeipel introduces new characters and the title of the exhibition, Saturn Return, allude to this next phase. On a psychological level the term symbolises the ultimate entrance to adulthood, which is also known as a midlife crisis that specifically occurs in and around your 30s.

von Zeipel hereby challenges the classical form and has partly removed the pure humanlike anatomy of the sculptures. The spiral and the movement are recurring themes for these new characters. If her previous works show a high degree of realism then these new ones take on more symbolic and hallucinogenic shapes. Artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Lee Lozano, Hans Bellmer and H.R Giger have all been a source of inspiration.

Cajsa von Zeipel, born 1983, graduated from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, Sweden 2010. She is currently present at Artipelag, Stockholm in the exhibition, Den Monokroma Symfonin, and has recently been shown at Mitchell Algus Gallery in New York. Previously this year, she participated in a solo-exhibition, Zoo Collective-Cajsa von Zeipel vs Carl Milles, at Millesgården, Lidingö and a thorough monograph, Pro Anatomy, was published by Capricious Publishing, NY.

Permanent installations by von Zeipel can be found in public spaces such as, outside MOOD-Stockholm, the roundabout in Hackefors, Linköping and in the University Park, Campus Valla, Linköping.
