We are delighted to announce Linder’s exhibition Origin of the World as our inaugurational exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko Project Space Paris.

 

Linder is an internationally celebrated artist who applies the principles of collage to the visual languages of graphic design, popular culture, fashion and fine art in the production of photomontages, performances and installations. The core of her work is a continuous exploration of desire, cultural expectations and the female body as commodity. Occasionally referring to her works as biopsies Linder’s collages manipulate, disrupt and play with porn and glamour, exposing the latter as something we should be wary of. Examining the way that women are depicted across visual culture, these collages draw attention to institutionalised misogyny. Denouncing the artificiality of groomed and tame femininity and revealing the performative aspects of gendered and social differences, the works are sometimes provocative – and also funny.

 

Linder has worked with the pornographic image for four decades, often montaging the images from pornographic magazines with those that she finds in interior design and fashion publications, the common denominator in all three being the depiction of the female body. Her work is often forensic in its approach, a visual enquiry into who, what, where, why and how the images that we see around us have been constructed. The exhibition will display works from different recent series, including the one inspired by Ithel Colquhoun’s ‘Mantic Stain’ technique.

 

Linder, born 1954 in Liverpool, initially rose to fame as an artist and musician in the punk/post-punk arts and music scene in Manchester in the mid 1970s. Her large-scale outdoor installation Bower of Bliss, commissioned by Art on the Underground, is currently on view at Southwark Station, London. Other current projects include a solo exhibition at the Monteverdi Art Gallery, Tuscany Italy, A flower in my mouth, at the Salzburger Kunstverein, Austria, Art and Porn at ARoS Museum of Modern Art, Aarhus, Denmark, The Enigma of the Hour at the Freud Museum, London, The Aerodrome, Ikon Gallery Birmingham and Collage at Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. In 2020, Linder will be the subject of a solo exhibition at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge.

 

Selected past solo-exhibitions include Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (2018); Glasgow Women’s Library (2018); Chatsworth, Derbyshire (2018); Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France (2013); Tate St Ives, Cornwall (2013); Chisenhale Gallery, London (2010); and Museum of Modern Art/PS1 (2007). Linder was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award in 2017.

Linder, artiste britannique de renommée internationale, applique les principes du collage aux langages visuels du design graphique, de la culture populaire, de la mode et des arts plastiques dans la production de photomontages, de performances et d'installations. L’essentiel de son travail repose sur une exploration continue du désir et des attentes culturelles, et sur la perception du corps féminin en tant que marchandise. Considérant parfois ses œuvres comme des biopsies, les collages de Linder manipulent, perturbent et jouent entre pornographie et glamour, considérant ce dernier comme une chose dont nous devrions nous méfier. Etudiant la manière dont les femmes sont représentées dans la culture visuelle, ces collages attirent l'attention sur une misogynie communément admise. Dénonçant le caractère artificiel d’une féminité apprêtée et apprivoisée, et en révélant les aspects performatifs des différences sociales et genrées, les œuvres de Linder sont provocatrices, mais aussi empreintes d’un certain humour.

 

Linder travaille sur l’imagerie pornographique depuis plus de quarante ans, comparant souvent les photographies des magazines spécialisés avec celles qu'elle trouve dans les revues de décoration et de mode, le dénominateur commun étant la représentation du corps féminin. Son travail est de nature quasi médico-légale, à la façon d’une enquête visuelle sur qui, quoi, où, pourquoi et comment les images qui nous environnent ont été construites. L’exposition présentera des œuvres de différentes séries récentes, y compris la série inspirée de la technique de «Mantic Stain» de l’artiste britannique Ithel Colquhoun, ainsi que la serie Relief avec les stars français tel que Marina Vlady, Brigitte Bardot et Sacha Distel.

 

Linder, née en 1954 à Liverpool, s'est d'abord fait connaître sur la scène artistique et musicale punk/post-punk à Manchester au milieu des années 1970. Sa grande installation extérieure Bower of Bliss, Southwark Station, à Londres.
